Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir provisionally suspended after EPO positive
Olympic and world marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after an out-of-competition sample tested positive for EPO. The AIU said the 33-year-old Kenyan provided the sample in Kenya before she won the Sydney Marathon on 30 August 2026. Jepchirchir clocked two hours, 18 minutes and 31 seconds to win the race. The positive result has cast a shadow over one of the most decorated distance runners of her generation.
The provisional suspension means Jepchirchir cannot compete in recognised events while the case is investigated. It is not a final finding of guilt. Athletes have the right to respond, request analysis of the B sample and present their case in a hearing. The process is expected to determine whether a violation has occurred and what sanctions, if any, should follow. Until then, the Sydney result and her immediate racing future remain uncertain.
Jepchirchir won the Sydney Marathon by more than three minutes from compatriot Irene Chepet Cheptai. Sydney became the seventh world major in 2026, and the 2026 race was expected to further strengthen Jepchirchir’s standing in the women’s marathon. Instead, the result is now part of an anti-doping case. If a violation is confirmed, possible consequences could include disqualification, loss of prize money or medals and a ban. None of those outcomes has been decided yet.
EPO, or erythropoietin, is a natural substance produced in the kidneys that stimulates the creation of new red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the muscles. When EPO is injected, it can increase the number of red blood cells and may improve endurance. It is banned in sport. Injected EPO is detectable in urine or blood only for a short window, which is why out-of-competition testing and well-timed samples are important in anti-doping efforts.
Jepchirchir became the Olympic women’s marathon champion at the 2026 Tokyo Olympics and returned to Tokyo to win the World Championships in September 2026. She broke the women’s half-marathon world record in 2026 and set it three more times in 2026. Her major marathon wins include New York in 2026, Boston in 2026 and London in 2026. The Sydney victory added another major title to a career that already placed her among the leading marathon runners of the modern era.
Her record made the news especially significant. Jepchirchir has been a consistent performer in championship and major races, and her success has made her one of the most recognisable names in Kenyan athletics. A positive test for EPO is therefore a major shock for the sport. It also shows that anti-doping authorities are prepared to pursue cases involving top athletes and that out-of-competition testing remains a central tool in protecting fair competition.
The AIU is responsible for investigating doping and integrity issues in international athletics. Provisional suspensions are used to keep athletes out of competition while a case is pending. The process usually allows the athlete to challenge the evidence and seek a hearing. Appeals may also be possible depending on the outcome. The exact timetable of this case has not been made clear, and speculation about the final result would be premature before the official process runs its course.
Kenya is a global power in distance running, but the country has faced a series of doping cases in recent years. Those cases have increased scrutiny of testing, athlete support and governance in Kenyan athletics. Jepchirchir’s case will add to that debate, although it would be unfair to draw broad conclusions about all Kenyan athletes from one case. The focus should remain on the facts, the evidence and the due process available to the athlete.
The case also raises questions about the Sydney Marathon result and the wider women’s marathon landscape. If the violation is confirmed, the race result could be revised under anti-doping rules. If Jepchirchir is cleared, she could return to competition after the provisional suspension is lifted. Either way, the uncertainty is damaging for organisers, sponsors, rivals and fans. Fair competition depends on clear and timely resolution of such cases.
For now, the athletics world is waiting for the next step in the AIU process. Jepchirchir’s response, any B sample analysis and a possible hearing will be closely watched. Her career has been built on major victories and record-breaking performances, but the EPO positive has placed those achievements under scrutiny. The final outcome will depend on the evidence and the independent process, not on speculation.
